After you have done your research as mentioned in Part 1 (read it here if you haven’t), it’s time to choose the ring!
At first glance, all engagement rings will look the same to you; all shiny and sparkly. But really, there are a few tiny things that makes all of them different from each other.
So, here are the are just FOUR things you need to go through to find the perfect ring.
1) Choosing the Ring Band
When choosing the type of metal of the band, consider her lifestyle patterns and aesthetic taste. If she has a more active lifestyle, consider getting a stronger metal. If she likes vintage things, consider the yellow or rose gold.
2) The Quality of the Diamond, i.e. 4Cs
Since you’re already going to pay a large sum, shouldn’t you get your money’s worth on a good quality diamond? The quality of a diamond is graded by the 4 Cs; Color, Clarity, Cut,Carat
GIA has a page dedicated to explaining this 4 properties with visuals! Click on the images below for more information.
But to sum it up, avoid any color grade below H (too yellow) or any cut grade below Very Good (not enough sparkle).
3) The Shape of the Diamond
Besides the 4Cs, you may want to consider the shape of the diamond in accordance to her aesthetic preference. Here are the common shape patterns for diamonds
Round would be the most timeless of all and it’s easier for this shape to fit into different settings. Where else the Princess cut is a popular shape for engagement rings. In recent years, more rings with Heart diamond are spotted too!
4) Choose the Placement (a.k.a the setting) Of the Diamond
Again, the setting of the diamond(s) depends on her preference and lifestyle. You are not limited to just one type of setting, as some rings could be a combination of 2 or more settings E.g. Channel + Prong.
So that’s it for the design of the ring! While you may still be overwhelmed by this, a word of advice from Art of Manliness suggests that,
“Out of all the four C’s, cut is the most important. Even if you have the perfect color, clarity, and carat, if the cut isn’t right, the diamond won’t have that fiery brilliance that your fiancé will show off to her friends.”
