Here’s the most exciting part of any wedding – choosing your dream dress! I’m sure most of us girls would have fantasized ourselves in a beautiful ball gown whilst we waltz down the aisle like a princess.
But (I really hate to burst your bubble now), did you know that a big poufy ball gown MAY NOT be suitable for you? Before you digest this sentence with horror and shock, calm down! What I truly mean is, as everybody has a different body shape, you may actually look more flattering in different types of gown.
So if you want to know what silhouette will suit you best and highlight your bodily assets to make you look your most beautiful on your special day, you first need to…
Identify your body type
The good people at Shop Your Shape has come up with a “Body Shape Calculator”. All you have to do is input your vital stats and they will generate the best-estimated body type for you, as well as styling tips for your body shape.
Now that you know your body type, it’s time to pick the silhouette best suited for you! For this article, I’m touching on the 4 main types of body shape; Straight, Pear, Inverted Triangle and Hourglass.
For brides with Straight body type
Ball Gowns are your go-to dress. The fitted bodice and fullness of the skirt will create a more defined waist for you, adding curves to your figure. However this is not advisable for petite brides, as you will get swallowed by the sheer volume of the skirt.
For petite brides, you can consider the Sheath gown.
The slim shape will make you look taller and this dress is suitable for brides with a sleek figure.
The Empire Gown is also a good consideration as the high-waisted bodice creates curves for your figure and the body-hugging factor will make you look taller too.
For brides with Hourglass body type
Mermaid Gowns should be on your list of “Considerable”. You have the best figure type so practically everything would suit you. But if you have well-balanced curves, might as well show them off right?
If you don’t like tight fitting styles (as mermaid dresses are quite constricting), you can consider a Trumpet Dress. It has the same shape as a mermaid dress, but it gives more room and it’s easier for you to move in.
For brides with a Triangle / Pear shaped figure
A-line Gowns, Ball Gowns and Empire Gowns will help balance the fullness of your hips. Going for a dress that shows off your shoulders will help “widen” your upper bodylines, making you look more proportionate too.
A-line Wedding Gown
For brides with Inverted Triangle figure (broad shoulders)
Ball Gowns will be suitable for you, as the fullness of the skirt will create symmetry with your broad upper body.
For petite brides, you can consider a Short Dress. Showing off your legs will draw attention away from your broad shoulders.
Do note that this is just a reference guide for you. If you still have a dream gown in mind, go for it!
Because what matters most is that you’re comfortable and happy with your selection.
But don’t forget to listen to your consultants as they have rich experiences and will be able to advise what is best suited for you.
Ask a lot of questions if you need to too. Happy dress shopping!
